I believe it was nine years ago, I was in the city hall of a small town in the northern Peninsula of Michigan, I step into the line and waiting for the clerk. In front of me was a middle-aged man, he leaves the family section blank on his form and had the following conversation with the lady behind the desk.

“this column should be filled,” the lady behind the glass said.

“fill by what?” he replied.

“your spouse?”

“divorced”

“what about your parents?”

“They all died when I was very young.”

“brothers, sisters?”

“I was the only child, only one.”

“cousins, aunts?”

“no, I’m the only one left.”

Then the clerk stops asking questions and begins typing, silent was the only thing between the two. When the man turned around, I saw his eyes turning red, with no wife and no children that must be the loneliest man in this world.

I was too immature to understand, how people can be alone, just a very naive child, watch people come and go. I always enjoyed running around or chatting with friends over the phone, with billions of people in this world, how can you be alone.

Turns out you can,

By the end, we all in this world alone.
