When I’m looking back to history, one trend is clear, the exponential growth of wealth positively correlates with the advancement of information technology. From the Roman road network to the modern-day internet, our society can generate more value when there’s a faster and more stable way for human connection.

Right until the beginning of the 20th century, the successes of a business always correlate with the speed of information transferred; for the shipowner in the American colony, knowing the price of tobacco and cotton in London faster than others, gave them a decisive advantage of buying low and selling high. However, the invention of the telegram dramatically changed this rule, and the adoption of the internet destroyed it. As a result, modern-day businesses are no longer able to gain a comparative advantage against their competitor. In my opinion, due to unprecedented accessibility of information, the dominant factor of a company to gain more market share is no longer the ability to gather information at a faster speed or more extensive volume, but the power of processing the data, accurately analyze what is behind the data, and use it to efficiently creating value.

I chose a business major as my field of study because I wish to open opportunities for me and others to create value and enrich this world to make it a better place. Value is created from the connection, and marketing is the art of finding and planning connections. It will assess the business, not as a bridge-builder but as a blueprint planner. What I wish to do in my career is create the link between the company and the customer, find the demand, and make the connection efficiently to excel not only the company I’m working for but also the society. I believe the knowledge I intend to learn from this institution will be a helpful tool for me to achieve this vision of building a better world with more connections between people.

This was the essay I turn in to many schools for reason of major selection.
